Jon and I decided it was time to get Isaac out of diapers. He seemed to be interested in it which we were obviously hoping for before the baby comes! Nobody wants two kids in diapers right? The first decision we had to make was do we buy a little potty or a cushion for the toilet. This was pretty easy because neither one of us liked to idea of cleaning the little toilet! After a couple days of potty training I can say if you're going to buy a cushion make sure you get a good one! We just bought the little $9 one from Wal-Mart and it's pretty cheap. Still don't regret choosing it over the toilet though! Isaac always seemed to love the idea of going potty on the big toilet like Mom and Dad. The next thing we had to decide was obviously HOW we were going to train him. This was also very simple to decide on because it's the oldest and most useful method ever! I was a little hesistant to start this week because we had just got back from Washington Sunday at 12 pm and I wasn's ure I was ready to be stuck at home for the next few days. But Monday morning, I woke up and decided I was going to go for it. The first thing I did to get ready for the big day was draw a colorful chart with a graph for Isaac to put stickers in each box every time he hit the toilet. I have a huge bowl of suckers so of course I had to make that part of the reward. I decided to keep a short journal of our days here at home during this process on my blog so feel free to read!
Day 1: As soon as Isaac woke up, I took him to the bathroom and sat him on the toilet. I told him to see if he could try going pee and he didn't seem too interested. So I started with a pair of training pants, basically like a diaper, and a shirt, and we would run to the bathroom every 5 minutes until we got a hit. Once he hit the toilet twice I would bump the time frame up to ten minutes. He would need to get two hits during the ten minute intervals and then we'd go up to 15, 20, then 30, 40, 50, and up to an hour. Any time he would miss we would drop back down to the shorter time frame. He didn't have any successes in the first couple hours, just a lot of peeing in the training pants. So, that's when I decided to toss the training pants and let him run around bare. Unfortunately he had less hits than misses, but finally as the night went on he started getting it and we got 9 hits and 1 miss before bed!
I went the bed feeling confident for Day 2 because we did so well and it wasn't as stressful as I thought it would be!
Day 2: Once again, I got Isaac up and straight to the bathroom. This time he had a dry diaper and when I got him on the toilet he did it! After all the success we had the day before, we were at the 50 minute interval so we started with that. He got two hits so I bumped him up to one hour, but had a couple misses so we are back down to 40 minutes. I have him wear the training pants at night and during his naps and we'll work on that part of the training later.
I am so proud of Isaac and the success he's had so far. I know he'll be fine because he is a smart boy and likes to discover he can do big boy things.
